And just like that – the role of the women became even narrower
“Sex and the city” Started with broadcast in 1998, I was 23 years old and then the series was recorded as an obvious reference in culture. The message was that as a woman you were entitled to everything; Sex, freedom, friendship, career. It was feminism embedded in capitalism where the promise was that it was normal to choose how you wanted to live and where the liberation was to pretend it was true. Just like Spice Girls, who broke through around the same time, the starting point was that there was a limited selection of women’s roles.
Although the series was made demographically for me, I absolutely did not like when it arrived. I connected the finances and tried to conquer the world of the world. So and completely involuntarily, Miranda was the character that was implied, was assigned to me, making it all felt extra embarrassing.
Miranda was a caricature on CareerClearly dexualized with their often fairly ugly clothing and short hair. At the same time there were reconciliation functions; Miranda was at least financially independent, actually seemed to keep his job at a law firm and was also the only one who fought the promise of the series to place friends for the boys. At one point she even said: my God, we can talk about something else! During the seven seasons of the series, she had a bit boring, but okay, she continued to work, became pregnant with the kind but uninteresting Steve and was forced to move to Brooklyn. It was stingy towards her, but the essence of the character was still intact.
Starts tomorrow The third season of the sequel to “Sex and the City”, medium -sized drama “and just like that”. Even this series should really suit me, I am only a few years younger than friends who are now struggling with things like menopausal flaps, teenage children and diseases. But unfortunately, just like many others, I find it difficult to look at it. The critics have talked a lot about it that it is awake, but I think the problem is another.
If Satc was a mirror of the dreams of female liberation about the conditions of capitalism, then “and just” is “somewhat even smaller and exhausted
I watched twice through all seasons of “Sex and the City”, the first was when I was a maternity leave and the second during the pandemic. I don’t think it was a coincidence that I looked at it when I felt caught and limited in different ways, the greatest attractiveness of the series is the freedom of the city and the movement itself. But it certainly also has something else that lasts over time, and it is precisely the clear characters in combination with some respect and freedom for the topics it deals with. It affects the time in which it is, plays with it and enjoys it.
If Satc was a mirror of the dreams of female liberation about the circumstances of capitalism, then “and just” is “somewhat smaller and more depressed. The liberated Samantha is no longer even ahead, which feels typical because the free sexuality she represented no longer has a place in our conservative contemporary. Samantha’s persona always felt like a male imagination-even in the liberated 90s, women knew it is difficult to have many one-off leaves without ultimately creating a certain void. But in the new series I miss her happy and self -assured conquests.
The worst abuse However, Miranda was committed in the series. From a cynical and smart realist, in “and just like that”, she has been converted into a confused and anxiously stubborn in her boring marriage for 20 years without trying to get it on the right keel or leave. In the new relationship with CHE Diaz, a non-binary stand-up comedian whose replicas could have been written by an AI, she behaves as a person completely without will and self-respect. The worst of all is that she has completely lost contact with contemporary – when she starts to connect and gets a black woman as a teacher, she loses the concepts, stems and swinging and pulling away.
The actor Cynthia NixonDie Miranda plays, as a gay person since the “Sex and the City” era and also in the candidate to become the Governor of New York with a progressive platform. She is one of the executive producers of the series, and perhaps her life has been squeezed in her character, what do I know. It is clear that the development is a betrayal of the core of the character, and it is no wonder it is cooled on different fan forums: Miranda had Never done there!
In my own version of the future of Miranda she is the head of her own law firm, maybe she has a young lover
Of the four of the series Costs are Charlotte the only one who got the life she wanted, but then her dream was also limited to marrying a rich man. In this way the journey of “Sex and the City” to “and so” ultimately becomes an illustration of the difference between the post-political dreams of the 90s and the depressive, conservative contemporary. Remaining from the four original elections on the road – the slut, the slop, career and housewife – is finally the last links. In the nineties we thought the roles were too restrictive, but today the vision is apparently even narrower.
In my own version of the future of Miranda she is the head of her own law firm, perhaps she currently has a young lover like all other women with middle -aged in popular culture. It is not an ideal political or feminist, but it would be a realistic character development for a smart and driven Capricorn. Above all, I think that the screenwriters could have treated both her and us to view it.
