The attack on the Iranian nuclear power plant can cause a radioactive disaster, IAEA said

Istanbul (Antara) – Russia warns that the attack at the Bushr (PLTN) nuclear power plant in Iran can cause major disasters, such as the Chernobyl tragedy in 1986.

This was unveiled by Alexey Likhachev, head of the Russian Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom, on Thursday (6/19), on the sidelines of the International Economic Forum St. Petersburg, as reported by the RIA press agency.

“If the first unit of the PLTN Bushhr is still operating, this will be attacked, this will be a disaster similar to Chernobyl,” Likhachev said.

He referred to the fourth reactor explosion in the Kernobyl -core center in Ukraine (at the time part of the Soviet Union) that has so far been considered the worst nuclear disaster in history.

Likhachev emphasized that such attacks would “surpass the limit between goodness and evil.”

He added that Rosatom continued to follow the situation in Bushehr, including the safety of Russian technicians who were placed there.

Until now, Likhachev said, there is no physical damage to the uranium enrichment facilities in Iran and no radiation silling after Israel attacks Iran’s nuclear installations.

“As far as we know about the structure of enrichment facilities such as in Natanz, the power of attack (Israel) has not been able to physically damage its underground spaces,” he said.

Likhachev also revealed that dozens of Russian technicians in the facility had been evacuated by Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“At the moment we still consider safely to maintain our staff at Bushehr … We are ready to face all the possibilities, including the rapid evacuation of all our employees,” he said.

Tensions in the middle -old increased since last Friday (13/6) when Israel launched coordinated air strikes to a number of locations in Iran, including the military and nuclear locations of Iran. In exchange, Iran launched a rocket attack on Israel.

Israel reported that at least 24 people were killed and hundreds of others were injured in an Iranian counterattack, while Iran stated that at least 639 people were killed and more than 1,300 were injured in Israeli attacks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told international media expert leaders in St. Petersburg on Thursday morning that there are currently 250 Russian technicians in Iran’s Bushehr Pltn.
