St. Petersburg, Russia (Antara) – attacks at nuclear power stations (PLTN) of the Bushehr in Iran can cause much more radioactive pollution than nuclear explosions, although the reactor cannot explode in it.
This was unveiled by Deputy Director General of the International Energy Agency (IAEA) Mikhail Chudakov to Ria Novosti on Wednesday (18/18) on the sidelines of the International Economic Forum St. Petersburg (Spief) in Russia.
“Based on my experience and common sense, no power plant in the world is protected against war … If you fire missiles on the reactor, you will see pollution in the region. You won’t see nuclear explosion,” said Chudakov.
He claimed that the incident with regard to nuclear reactivity was expected by modern reactor technology. Such incidents last took place in the Pltn of Chernobyl Noot in 1986.
According to Chudakov, PLTN cannot explode as a nuclear bomb, but can be damaged and radiation to the surrounding area.

“Unfortunately, there will be more pollution (radioactive) in such events than of nuclear explosions,” he said.
The IAEA data shows that Iran currently has a core power reactor at the Bushr (BNPP) unit 1 PLTN, which started working commercially in 2013 and contributed almost 1.7 percent of the total national electricity production in 2023.
The Bushhr Pltn is approximately 1200 kilometers south of the Iranian capital, Tehran. The construction started by German companies in 1975, but the project was stopped after the Iranian Revolution broke out in 1979
In 1995 the contract to complete the nuclear power plant was signed by Iran and the Russian Ministry of Energy. The nuclear power plant began to produce electricity in September 2011. The opening ceremony was attended by a number of Russian officials.
