Jakarta (Antara) – Representative for food, natural resources and the environment of the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (PPN/Bappenas) Leonardo Aat Sambodo stated that the dedication of Indonesia to reduce the emissions of the nickel industry by 81 percent.

“This route map focuses on a reduction in the emissions of the nickel industry by 81 percent in 2045, in accordance with the deployment of Indonesia to reach net zero missions before 2060,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

As a producer of 60 percent of the nickel of the world, Indonesia would have a great potential in encouraging downstream nickel that contains few emissions and high competitiveness.

The route map itself is designed to become a strategic input in the National Medium Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029 and is in line with the target of the National Long -Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045.

Since the beginning of 2024, he continued, the preparation of Road Maps has several collaboration in more than 30 mining companies and smelter Nickel in Sulawesi and Noord -Maluku15 Ministries/institutions, as well as academics.

The four most important strategies in this route map, namely energy and material efficiency, fuel replacement, material replacement and low carbon electricity use. The strategy of using low -carbon electricity is a priority, given that the largest source of emissions in the nickel industry comes from steam plants Captured.

“By using new and renewable energy potentials in nickel-producing and processing areas, industries can use the energy mix from solar, wind, water, biomass and green hydrogen to reduce dependence,” said Leonardo.

Senior Climate Manager of WRI Indonesia Egi Suarga also explained that the low -carbon arm of the nickel industry was the first step in the transformation of administration to use Indonesia’s potential as a 60 percent nickel producer in the world.

In this way Indonesia can become a world leader in producing low emissions and responsible nickel.

WRI Indonesia analysis shows that the emissions of the nickel industry can increase to 86 percent in 2045, if not intervened.

That is why the National Nickel Decarbonization Road Map also recommends the construction of 47.3 Gigawatt (GW) New and renewable energy channel plants, including the addition of 5.1 GW green hydrogen -based in North Maluku with limited energy and renewable energy and bihalling of the infrastructure.

“Additional recommendations include a competitive policy for low carbonated energy price and the formation of the green nickel standards of Indonesia to regulate the use of net energy and greenhouse gas emissions in the production process,” said Egi.
