Washington (Antara) – President Donald Trump of the United States on Thursday (6/19) said he would decide within two weeks whether he would give the green light to the American involvement in attacks on Iran or not.
“Based on facts with regard to substantial possibilities for negotiations that could take place with Iran in the near future, I will make a decision in the coming two weeks,” Trump said in a statement from the White House spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt.
The announcement was made when Trump was confronted with internal unrest with a number of Republican figures with regard to American involvement in Israeli military operations against Iran.
Media Figure Tucker Carlson, assistant President Steve Bannon, Senate member Rand Paul and DPR member Marjorie Taylor Greene was one of the Republican leaders who opposed American involvement in direct military operations.
They said that American involvement in conflicts would attract Trump into a more high -cost foreign intervention operation. This was even what he refused during the last presidential campaign.
Conversely, other Republican leaders such as Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham support the involvement of the US in direct military action against Iran.
However, the White House confirms that the current priority is to ensure that Iran will not have nuclear weapons.
“It is not necessary to be surprised at the position of the president that Iran should not have nuclear weapons. He has been very clear about this for years,” Leavitt said.
“That is why he gave freedom and made efforts to achieve diplomatic solutions,” said the White House spokesperson, added.
He claimed that Iran had everything they needed to make nuclear weapons. “What they need now is the decision of the Supreme Leader (Iran) to do this, and only takes a few weeks to complete the production of these weapons,” he said.
If Iran is true to make a nuclear weapon, Leavitt said it would be a threat to both Israel, the US and the whole world.
“It has become an agreement from the whole world, including countries such as Russia, that Iran is not allowed and may not have nuclear weapons,” Leavitt said.
Iran continues to deny that his party is trying to develop a nuclear weapon.
In the meantime, Leavitt confirmed that the special envoy of President Trump for the Midden -East Steve Witkoff and the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had communicated last week after the attacks of Israel on Iran. He also ensured that the correspondence between the two continued.
“As you know, we have been involved in six rounds of negotiations with them, both indirectly and directly,” said the White House spokesperson.
Nuclear negotiations that have been taking place since April and were planned to continue last week, were canceled by Tehran after Israel had attacked nuclear and military facilities and killed nuclear scientists and senior officials in rocket attacks on 13 June.
Israeli authorities said at least 25 people were killed and hundreds were injured because of an Iranian rocket counterattack on the land. In the meantime, 639 people were killed and more than 1,300 were injured in the impact of Israeli rocket attacks on Iran, according to Iranian reports in the media.
The two weeks mentioned by Trump were delivered when the German, France and the British Ministers of Foreign Affairs were planning to meet Iranian Araghchi Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss diplomatic solutions for the Israeli Iran conflict.
On Friday, they will meet Araghchi Minister of Foreign Affairs in Geneva, Switzerland, that the DPA press agency of DPA said it refers to German diplomatic sources. There are no further details about the meeting.
Although he claimed not to follow the schedule of the special envoy of Witkoff, Leavitt said he could ask the exact agenda directly from the person involved.
